Through precise genealogical research Ms. Child takes us on a journey of “The Case of the Missing Family Heirloom: A Copley Pastel of a Boston Bride.” She traces the compelling history of the 200 year old portrait, starting with the sale of a San Francisco antique dealer’s collection through Sotheby’s in 2003. The journey then progresses to the family mansion in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, and our travels end at the studio of John Singleton Copley in Boston.

Deborah Child received her B.A. and M.A. from Queen’s University, Kingston, Ontario, Canada. Her master’s thesis”A Question of Attribution: Eight British Landscape Paintings Given to Joseph Wright of Derby (1734-1797) in Queen’s University Art Collection” 1990 is unpublished. In 1994-95 Child was Assistant Director at The Art Gallery at U.N.H., and the following six years she worked at Northeast Auctions.  She spent two years as N.H. Special Project Assistant at Strawbery Banke Museum, also as project curator of the “Catalogue Raisonne’ for John Samuel Blunt (1798-1835) and curated an exhibit of the artist work at the Portsmouth Historical Society. Child is a regular contributor to the magazine Antiques and Fine Arts.

The Piscataqua Decorative Arts Society is a nonprofit organization with a mission to promote original historical research resulting in publication. The primary focus is on the greater Piscataqua region of New Hampshire and Maine, with connecting links to Massachusetts and beyond. For more information, check the Web site www.pdasociety.org
