Farmers-Market_2012MARK YOUR CALENDAR

Come to the Exeter and Portsmouth Farmers' Markets this week for everything you need to get your garden started. From seedlings and garden transplants to compost, an array of market vendors makes it easy. It's a great way to buy local and bring a bit of your favorite farms home to your own garden. (Continued below)

"It's so nice to see so many people carrying garden seedlings", says Jeff Cantara of New Roots Farm in Newmarket, referring to the folks already stocking up. Cantara explains that they've been conservative about bringing their warm season transplants to both the Exeter and Portsmouth Farmers' Markets, keeping them protected in the greenhouse just a little bit longer.

But that all changes this week, and market shoppers will have their choice of cold and warm season seedlings including watermelons, peppers, squash, eggplant and a huge variety of tomatoes. "It's such a cool feeling," says Cantara, "to know that people throughout the Seacoast will be growing out seedlings from New Roots and other farms to feed their families."

Black Kettle Farm from Lyman, Maine, will also be at the Portsmouth Farmer's Market with loads of vegetables ready to go right into the ground. They plan to have plenty of kale, chard and specialty greens available among their selection of lettuce, cucumbers, herbs, zucchini, and sweet peppers.

Riverslea will even have fresh compost from their farm in Epping especially for this week's Get Your Garden Started Days at both markets.

And don't forget to pick up some treats for that boost of energy you'll need while gardening, like maple coated pecans from Anderson's Mini-Maples at the Exeter Farmers' Market. Find out which vendors come to each market by visiting the Seacoast Growers' Association Web site at www.seacoastgrowers.org. These are just a few examples of what you’ll find available this week.

Stop by the Exeter Farmers' Market on Thursday from 2:15-6pm on the Swasey Parkway, and the Portsmouth Farmers' Market on Saturday morning from 8am-1pm at City Hall to pick up your garden and get out there and grow.
