WRITING SAMPLES - Excerpts From Past Projects

From intro to software user's manual, Profit Tools LLC, Lee, NH:

Profit Tools for Trucking is, we believe, the most advanced transportation logistics software in existence. Why? Because of our basic design philosophies: We built Profit Tools on a state-of-the-art, industry-standard database for the best data integrity and longest useful life. Flexibility of operation was a top priority, to let the software adapt to the user, not the other way around. We believe that it should run on commonly available hardware to keep our customer's costs low and that components which had already been perfected by other software developers and adapted widely by the industry - should be integrated, not reinvented at our customer's expense.

Properly used, Profit Tools for Trucking will increase productivity - dramatically in most cases - over manual methods and non-integrated computer applications. It's like increasing your workforce without adding payroll. All pertinent data, from dispatch to billing, is both integrated and available to all users at a click of the mouse. There is no redundant data entry or dependence upon oral communications. . .

From composition teachers newsletter, which I also edited:

Is it me or is it worse this year? I've worked the students until I'm exhausted - time to wave a white flag and collapse with the portfolios. I have a night class, all freshmen day students, no non-trads to spice the mix. If they've had dinner they're asleep, if they haven't they're on edge. Maybe these kids registered late and my class was the last choice. Anyway, I've tried humor to get their attention and it works, sometimes.

A Dave Barry essay about shooting potato guns from the tops of Miami buildings worked well, but Mark Twain's "The Danger of Lying in Bed" did not, perhaps it was too far removed from their context. We analyzed the structure of a Jeff Foxworthy joke, "If you've ever climbed a water tower with a bucket of paint to defend your sister's honor, you might be a redneck," with some success, and they got a kick out of my affected southern drawl. . .

From buzzword sheet, Profit Tools LLC, Lee, NH:

. . . Client-Server: A network of two or more computers on which at least one of the computers is a server, dedicated to the purpose of providing centrally managed data and (or) software to other computers. Client-server networks have a number of advantages over mainframe-type multi-user systems, the most notable of which is processing and file-access speed. Since individual computers - or workstations - have their own processors, memory, and disk storage, they are able to split the processing load with the server, leaving it free to perform its primary task of making software and data available to clients. . .

From marketing video, Logicraft Corp., Nashua, NH:

. . . In the beginning, Cardware allowed DEC users to run personal computer software right from their terminals. Popular PC programs such as Lotus 1-2-3 became a reality in the DEC world. Then, when DEC announced the MicroVAX series of smaller computers, Logicraft responded with Cardware products to extend the versatility of this exciting new generation as well. Finally, the trend toward high-resolution interactive graphics as required by the computer-aided-design - or CAD - industry, placed a unique challenge before Logicraft's research and development team. The quest for a graphics-capable PC-emulation device spawned a new group of products: GrafVAX. . .

From sales brochure, DTI Technologies, Bedford, NH:

. . . If you make your living by communicating ideas graphically, then CAD is going to make an impact on your livelihood in the near future. DTI Technologies would like to help make your initiation into the world of computer-aided design a positive step, one that lets your ideas come to life unshackled by the limits of the medium. Let your imagination soar!

From US FIRST robot competition, spectator program:

. . . As science, engineering and technology define the twenty-first century, America's performance in those disciplines will determine its place in the future. Yet, the achievement levels of America's youth are plunging toward an abyss of scientific and technological illiteracy. If America's place is to be secure in the twenty-first century, the next generation must be won over to the excitement of science, the thrill of technology, and the satisfaction of using mathematics. That is the role of US FIRST! . . .

From an essay published in a writers newsletter:

The exit ramp to writer's hell is probably marked with a big flashing neon "but." Good writing, but... great idea, but... strong characters, but... I'm an unpublished novelist, and like most I have a pile of rejections with that awful word "but" appearing at the turning point between praise and damnation. I always hoped that whatever followed would be helpful criticism, pearls of wisdom, useful suggestions, but most were hasty generalizations from harried editors, usually vague indications that my story was weak. I was lost until - out of frustration - I took Bob McKee's Story Structure course, and saw more clearly the underlying design of good story. . .
