Schooner_FameWAR OF 1812

FAME is a full-scale replica of a privateer schooner that sailed from Salem during the War of 1812. The original FAME was one of the first American privateers to get to sea and the first to send in a captured vessel. She took some 21 prizes before being wrecked in the Bay of Fundy in 1814. (See event listings below)

FAME preyed primarily on British and Canadian merchantmen, but she also seized several American vessels that were trading with the enemy — a widespread practice during the unpopular war.

The new FAME offers two-hour cruises out of its historic home port of Salem, sailing up to three times daily from Memorial Day through Halloween. Following are some of the special events we have planned for 2012.

May 26 — Opening Day! First public sails of the season aboard the Schooner FAME at 2, 4, and 6 PM.

June 16 — Rum and Revolution! 6-8 PM. During the Revolution and the War of 1812, hundreds of privateers sailed from New England ports to strike a blow for liberty. Come see what all the fuss was about! Sample contemporary beverages such as grog and rum punch, hear live performances of 18th-century songs, and even dance a hornpipe!

June 23-24 — FAME sails to the Maine Maritime Museum in Bath in a return to the waters where the original FAME was so active during the War of 1812. We will be conducting dockside tours from 9 AM - to 5 PM Saturday and Sunday. Saturday night, Capt. Mike Rutstein of FAME will join George Vaughan and James Nelson in a panel discussion of the War of 1812 at sea. Capt. Rutstein recently published a book about Salem's 1812 privateers, entitled The Privateering Stroke.
