What is the weather forecast for New Year’s Day?  Well, the Rotary Club of Portsmouth is hoping that you’re ready to say “Wet and Cold” – very wet and very cold. That’s the day Rotarians have scheduled for their annual ocean swim. Yes, the ocean you can barely survive in the summer – is open for winter. (Continued below)

On Saturday, January 1, the Portsmouth Rotary Club will be hosting its 8th Annual Polar Bear Swim.  This annual charity event encourages area companies and individual residents to welcome in the New Year by taking a dip at Great Island Common Beach, in New Castle, NH.  All proceeds of the Swim will benefit local organizations and non-profits such as Cross Roads House, Betty’s Dream, the YMCA, Camp Sunshine, the American Red Cross, and more.

In honor of our veterans and armed forces, this year’s theme is going to be the ‘Military.’  With many service members from the docked USS Virginia participating, this year’s Swim is also the perfect opportunity to cheer on those who bravely serve our country.

The event will begin with participant registration at Great Island Common Beach at 11:00 AM under a big, warm tent courtesy of Sperry Tents.  At 1:00 PM, the bullhorn will sound and it’s time to take the plunge.   All swimmers will be greeted afterwards with warm food and drink, commemorative gifts, and hearty congratulations.

Corporate sponsorships start at $250 and include company logo on the Portsmouth Rotary website, recognition at the event, a commemorative gift, as well as the opportunity to bring promotional materials to the Swim.  Individuals are also encouraged to participate at the charity event for a $250 swimmer's fee.

Current sponsors include Infinite Imaging, Lyons Law Offices, Piscataqua Savings Bank, Living Innovations, Seacoast Asset Management, Ocean Properties, Altus Engineering, and Ben’s Auto Body.  Further information about the event and sponsorship can be found at portsmouthrotary.com.
