WHO: Your humble editor  WHAT: Illustrated history lecture  TOPIC: Who Won the War of 1812?  WHEN. Thursday 7:30 pm September 22, 2011 WHERE: South Berwick, Maine COST: Free to the public (See details below)

When was the War of 1812? (That's a trick question.) If you don't recall America's "Forgotten War" with England, you're not alone. Two hundred years ago, with only 17 armed ships, a brash young United States declared war on the world’s largest navy (with 700 ships). Then we invaded Canada. That didn’t work. In retaliation the British burned Washington, DC. So how come we think we won?

On Thursday evening, September 22, starting at 7:30 pm, history writer J. Dennis Robinson offers an upbeat, often irreverent, bicentennial look at this region’s reluctant role in “Mr. Madison’s War.” The lecture gives special emphasis to the privateers who swarmed out of the Piscataqua River, and to the revival of the modern privateer LYNX, a $3 million tall ship built in Maine and registered in Portsmouth, NH.

Sponsored by the Old Berwick Historical Society, the program will be held at Berwick Academy's Jeppesen Science Center on Academy Street, and the public is invited. Refreshments will be served by volunteers.

Robinson has published over 1,000 articles on New Hampshire-area history and culture. His books for young readers include biographies of Jesse James and Lord Baltimore and Striking Back, a study of child labor protests. His hardcover histories of Strawbery Banke Museum and historic Wentworth by the Sea Hotel both received honors from the American Association for State and Local History (AASLH).
