On Saturday July 30 curator Sandra Rux will talk about the needlework sampler collection at the John Paul Jones House. The Portsmouth Historical Society is located at 43 Middle Street at the 1758 Purcell House, now home to the city museum. This talk focuses on new additions to the extraordinary sampler collection by local girls now housed in a special display. (Continued below)

During the early nineteenth century young girls in Portsmouth generally received instruction in embroidery, most often in schools run by young women or as part of a school run for both boys and girls. Reverend Alden’s Academy was one of those tuition schools. The Portsmouth Historical Society collection contains examples by Portsmouth girls dating from 1760 to 1840, with several of the prominent schools represented.

This talk will focus on new acquisitions—a sampler by Mary Pearse that was a museum purchase in 2010 and three samplers recently transferred from the Warner House collection. We will examine the new arrivals in the context of the collection. This is a great opportunity to see the entire collection housed in the Merilee Possner Memorial Gallery at the John Paul Jones House. Drawers with visible storage make it easy to compare and contrast the various samplers. Ms. Rux will discuss the relationships among the sampler makers and their instructors.
