“Strawbery Banke Museum enjoyed an enthusiastic appreciation for its 33rd Annual Candlelight Stroll on its first weekend,” according to Stephanie Seacord, Director of Marketing Communications. “Attendance far exceeded previous years, when the first weekend was typically the lightest because of the tree-lighting and holiday parade events. Thanks to online ticket promotions, the Museum welcomed several thousand visitors on Saturday night, with the added delight of the winter wonderland snow; and Sunday also saw thousands of happy Strollers, enjoying the candle lanterns, extensive decorations, holiday lights, dozens of talented performers and role-players and the milder weather. So far, Candlelight Stroll is one of the best ever.”

COAST reported that the free Vintage Christmas trolley, provided by the City of Portsmouth, saw an increase in ridership over last year’s first weekend – with 565 riders.

Looking ahead, Vintage Christmas in Portsmouth spans the entire month of December so there is a lot in store for visitors with Candlelight Stroll for the next two Saturdays and Sundays, holiday shows including An 1836 Portsmouth Nutcracker, Messiah Sing and A Merry Funny New England Christmas 2012. Visitors can hop on the free trolley to stay warm, travel between the two anchors, and get an overview of the downtown before deciding which shop to return to. The Greater Portsmouth Chamber of Commerce is running a Holiday Doors of Portsmouth competition which has enriched the beauty of the historic downtown. And, the Chamber has confirmed that two groups will be performing in the downtown on Friday December 7 from 4:30-6:30pm: the Market Square Carolers represented by the Portsmouth Middle School Chorus (the school’s clarinet and flute ensembles will return at the same time on Saturday December 8), and The Funky Diva Ensemble (a small acoustic group within The Funky Diva Band). The four Diva singers, accompanied by guitar and bass, will perform holiday music ranging from traditional carols to popular Christmas favorites.
