silhouette00EXHIBIT RUNS TO OCT 31, 2011

The popularity of silhouette images peaked in the early 19th century. Several traveling artists, among them William King and William Bache set up shop in Portsmouth for brief periods and offered their services. For twenty-five cents and about a three minute sitting you could get two to four copies of your image. (Continued below)

Compare this to the $30 to $40, plus large investment of sitting time, you would have to pay for a portrait. “Portsmouth Silhouettes” is a small exhibit of images from the Portsmouth Historical Society collection, the Portsmouth Athenaeum and Strawbery Banke Museum.

silhouette01The exhibit opens at the John Paul Jones House (43 Middle St, Portsmouth) with a gallery talk by curator Sandra Rux at 11AM on Saturday, June 25 and runs through October 31. Learn how these silhouettes were made and some details about the people portrayed. Please contact Sandra Rux at 436-8420 for more information.

The John Paul Jones House museum, operated by the Portsmouth Historical Society is open from 11-5 seven days a week through October 31.
