One of the most enduring Portsmouth stories about John Paul Jones is the tale of an American flag being made for the Ranger by a group of young ladies of Portsmouth. Helen Seavey was supposed to have contributed silk from her wedding petticoat for the stars.

Today we know the story was invented by Jones’s infamous biographer Augustus C. Buell. Yet  poems, plaques and reproduction flags continued to commemorate this event through the mid-twentieth century.

Please join us for a gallery talk at the John Paul Jones House, 43 Middle St Portsmouth by curator Sandra Rux on August 27 at 11am about the origin of the story and the relationship between John Paul Jones and the American flag.

This is part of our series of lectures that accompany the exhibit John Paul Jones, American Naval Hero: Real and Imagined, which will be at the John Paul Jones House through October 31. Please contact Sandra Rux at 436-8420 for more information.

The John Paul Jones House museum, operated by the Portsmouth Historical Society is open from 11-5 pm seven days a week through October 31.
