Dos Amigos
Burritos
107 State Street,
Portsmouth, NH Sun-Thurs (11 am to 11
pm), Fri-Sat
(11 am to 1:30 am)

For decades we've been
wondering why there are so few good places to eat cheaply in
downtown Portsmouth after dark. There are a zillion fine restaurants
and bars, but where to go -- other than Gilley's or pizza -- for a
quick, tasty, evening snack or a family meal? Welcome Dos Amigos Burritos
with quesadillas and burritos starting at $5 and tacos from $1.50. The
hours are late and the food is great. Located on busy State Street just
before the Kittery Bridge, the Mexican take-out has become an instant
success.

Visitors will recognize
the building. Dos Amigos occupies as the formerr site of A&D's
Barbscue. The new Mexican take-out is sparkling clean and fully redesigned
with a smooth oak floor and a dozen small tables. The two amigos are
Joel Harris (top photo) and Jay McSharry. Joel worked five years at the
Isles of Shoals and was a reporter at Foster's Daily when he interviewed
Jay, who owns the upsclae Jumpin
Jay's Fish Cafe on the other side of town. Jay also owns our Italian
dinner favorite, Radici's
. Joel and Jay
decided it was time to give Portsmouth the healthy take-out it deserves.

Joel tells us he mastered the Mexian fare while working at take-out spots in Boston and Portland. He's currently adjusting to 16-hour days and the sudden rush of appreciative downtowners and tourists on their way back from Prescott Park. When the weather cools, Joel promises new items -- a fish taxo, chilis and more. Already the healthy fare includes yogurt instead of sour cream on request. But you can also order steak cooked in Red Hook porter. After waiting decades we can only say -- muchas gratias amigos!
