The Piscataqua Decorative Arts Society will host a Tuesday, April 17 program entitled “Portsmouth Renaissance in the Arts: 1975 to Present.” A panel of local luminaries will by moderated by Peter Michaud. This unique event will take place at the Discover Portsmouth Center, starting at 5:00 pm. (Continued below)

The arts are often born out of a social movement. The revitalization of a rough seaport town, Portsmouth, NH, has created a nationally recognized arts community and has become a tourist destination.  Mr. Michaud will lead the panel in bringing this story to life.

The panel will include Gordon Carlisle, an artist who studied pastel portraiture at Montclair, N.J.’s Yard School of Art. Gordon also studied at Carnegie-Mellon, the Art Student’s League in NYC, the Boston Museum of Fine Art, and graduated in 1973 from the San Francisco Art Institute with a degree in printmaking. Gordeon moved to Montreal in 1975 and then to Portsmouth in 1982. He designs, paints, and installs commissioned public art murals. His latest work is a 6’ x 15’ mural created for Hampton Beach State Park

Marguerite Matthews of the Pontine Theatre, is also a panelist. She graduated in 1970 with a B.A. in Communications from Michigan State University. She went on to attend the Ecole du Mime Corporeal de Etiennne Decroux in Paris from 1972-74, receiving her NA in Physical Acting. Matthews has served on the board of the National Movement Theatre Association. She has also served terms on panels for the National Endowment for the Arts and the Massachusetts Cultural Council. She founded the Pontine Theater in 1977.

Our third panelist is James “Buddy” Haller, who was found and chef of the Blue Strawberry Restaurant in Portsmouth, which he opened in November of 1970. Haller has been described as a “Jackson Pollack in the kitchen.” He creates every dinner as a piece of art. Although he is a completely self-taught “artist” his career has gone past the restaurant phase and now encompasses television, the publication of seven books, several magazines articles, as well as a busy lecture circuit.

Completing the panel is Bob Chase, a preservationist and builder who brings to the table his expertise in the saving and preserving of our old buildings.

The event will be held at the Discover Portsmouth Center at the corner of Middle and Islington Streets in Portsmouth, NH. Doors open at 5:00 pm with wine and cheese served. The panel discussion begins at 5:30 sharp.  For questions check the Web site at pdasociety, org
