The formative relationship between the young Theodore Roosevelt and his backcountry mentor, William Wingate Sewall of Island Falls, Maine, is the subject of a talk by author Andrew Vietze on Thursday, March 22, at 7:30 pm at Berwick Academy's Jeppesen Science Center on Academy Street. The program is sponsored by the Old Berwick Historical Society, and the public is invited.  Refreshments will be served by volunteers.

Vietze is an award-winning writer and the former managing editor of Down East: The Magazine of Maine. His book Becoming Teddy Roosevelt: How a Maine Guide Inspired America's 26th President follows Roosevelt and Sewall into the woods of Maine, down to New York, and finally out West, where Roosevelt began his ranching venture. During his time with Sewall, Teddy Roosevelt is transformed from a “thin, pale youngster with bad eyes and a weak heart,” into the kind of man who could lead a country.

Like Bill Sewall, Vietze is also a Maine Guide, and spends six months as a seasonal ranger in the wilds of Baxter State Park.

Becoming Teddy Roosevelt has won numerous awards, including the Silver IPPY Award at the Independent Publisher Book Awards in New York, and was honored by decree of the 124th Maine State Legislature for capturing the symbolic spirit and unique character of Maine in his book.  Vietze was also announced as a finalist for a ForeWord magazine Book of the Year Award.

The author of five books, he has been published widely in such periodicals as Weather.com's Forecast Earth, Time Out New York, AMC Outdoors, Maine Times, Offshore, Explore, Crawdaddy!, and American Songwriter.
