NORTH WOODSTOCK, NH - The second run of the annual White Mountains Map and Guide is being printed on paper made in the northern end of the region, at Gorham Paper and Tissue. "It's pure New Hampshire," said Jayne O'Connor, president of White Mountains Attractions in North Woodstock, which markets 16 member tourism venues. "The geography is made in New Hampshire and it is being printed on paper that is made not just in New Hampshire, but in the heart of the White Mountains." (Continued below)

This marks the first time since 2009 that the map has been printed at the Gorham mill, the last operating paper mill in northern New Hampshire. The mill had shut down for months, before it was purchased in May 2011 by Patriarch Partners, a Lynn Tilton company.

In June, the mill advertised to more help, the first time in years that's happened.

"They make excellent paper," said Dick Bean, Senior Account Executive of Concord Litho, which is printing more than 300,000 of the detailed maps in its second run this year. "Annually, we use consume over 100 tons of Gorham’s fine grade paper lines and we're very happy the mill is back in operation."

The paper, he said, “has great opacity with superior brightness and whiteness.  Furthermore, with its excellent fiber content, it is lasting and durable, able to stand up to the demand of visitors from around the world.  This strength is very important in map printing.”

While the maps may travel out of New Hampshire, once they get in the hands of vacationers. they can rest assured that the map truly is made in the Granite State.

"It really does mean a lot to us, and our members, to be able to say that," O'Connor said. "Given the challenges in the paper industry, and especially for our neighbors in Gorham, being able to truly buy locally is something of which we are very proud."
