writer_clubA new support group for authors, the Piscataqua Writers Group, is aimed at New Hampshire and southern Maine seacoast writers. Its first meeting will take place on Thursday, March 10, from 6:30 to 8:30 pm in the Seacoast African American Cultural Center, located within the Discover Portsmouth Center at 10 Middle St. in Portsmouth.  (Continued below)

According to organizer Mark Pechenik, the Piscataqua Writers Group will create a supportive forum for those who are passionate about the art of written expression. “We hope to become a welcoming place for both established, published writers as well as those who simply enjoy writing as a creative hobby,” he says.

(Please note: Until the center's seasonal opening in May, group participants are asked to enter Seacoast African American Cultural Center through its rear entrance).

The mission of the group will be to encourage writers in their art through helpful, constructive guidance and suggestions. “We will be focusing less on the actual mechanics of writing and more on what inspires and moves writers – our group will seek to motivate people who are passionate about expressing themselves through the written word.”

Pechenik himself is a communications specialist with more than 30 years of experience writing and editing for newspapers, magazines, colleges and universities, and businesses. He is currently working on a manuscript that is loosely based upon a two decade-old paranormal mystery.

Pechenik expressed delight and appreciation that the group will be meeting within the Seacoast African American Cultural Center. “We are very grateful to the center and its members for hosting this initiative,” he says. “Their interest helps to promote a sense of diversity that will be very meaningful and welcome for the group as it gets underway.”

The only qualifications for membership in the Piscataqua Writers Group is a “serious interest and love of writing,” says Pechenik. “We are seeking people who are committed to their craft.” While there is no fee for attendance, group membership will be limited to no more than ten writers. Participants are encouraged to bring refreshments to share with the group.
