Bernard’s installations resonate with liveliness.  Through movement and repetition the audience experiences the direct relationship between the object and its meaning. These kinetic pieces are set in play by gallery docents and engineered to trigger a psychological response by the viewer.  Pendulum 9 uses organic material, encaustic, combined with the artist’s mark to create the illusion of movement within a polychromatic frame. Kim pushes and pulls between the worlds of automation and chance.  In Bardo State which consists of 49 spheres suspended from the ceiling by springs, Kim explores the “interregnum twixt death and rebirth” through tension, dynamism and harmony.

“My present projects investigate the intersection where the hard and fast science of physics collides with sublime spirituality, playfulness and a pinch of humor.  This quest for the magical moment where awe is directed at subjects more powerful than the objects and the ‘aha moment’ happens in the hands rather than the grey matter.  These recent kinetic works invite the viewer to engage the sculptures’ motion, as an extension one’s own energy, and break the no-touch rule of art.”
