Millennium Viking Visit

Page 2: The Icelander Cometh
At Portsmouth Naval Shipyard the Icelander crew paused to lower the mast half way for safer maneuverability in the treacherous Piscataqua River.
Flags flying, the replica Viking ship officially enters Portsmouth by passing beneath the Memorial Bridge that connects New Hampshire and Maine.
Little do the exhausted Viking heirs know what awaits them. On the shores of the Piscataqua a man in plastic chain mail and Norse helmet waits in the gathering crowd at the NH Port Authority dock.
This time the Vikings are not after plunder and conquest, unless, of course, you count T-shirt sales from the 1,000th anniversary visit. Last week, we spoke to the Icelandic ambassador to the US who told us the trip and accompanying promotion set the Icelandic government back about $4 million. Maybe a T-shirt is a small price to pay for a floating
history lesson.
