On March 11-13 Pontine Theatre presents The Whale at their West End Studio Theatre located at 959 Islington Street in Portsmouth NH.  Rebecca Mead, writing for The New Yorker, says, “Carlo Adinolfi transforms the stage into both the sea-locked world of the Pequod’s decks and the vast, unfathomable sea itself.”  (Continued below)

The Whale is Concrete Temple Theatre’s adaptation of Herman Melville’s 1851 novel, Moby Dick. Through movement, voice, and an extraordinary collection of hand-crafted and rigged props Carlo Adinolfi, creates life on a whale ship and even the great whale himself.  Mr. Adinolfi, a dancer and actor by training, puts into service a wide variety of storytelling traditions to tell the tale. The effect of one man embodying this enormous literary epic in 65 minutes, using only Melville’s text, is simultaneously playful and profound.

Diane Dubois, in The Scotsman (UK), describes The Whale as, “An intense, poetic reaction to Melville’s novel, created using a heightened theatricality and a set that would look at home in a gallery.”

Jeremy Hodges praises The Whale in a review for The Daily Mail (UK):  “When Moby Dick itself rises up from nowhere with fearsome power, it is easy to forget this is all in the mind, and you can almost taste the salt as you drown in the deep waters of Adinolfi’s imagination.”

The Whale is co-created by Concrete Temple Theatre's Co-Artistic Directors, Renee Philippi and Carlo Adinolfi.  Carlo Adinolfi performs The Whale and Renee Philippi directs. David Pinkard is Composer/Sound Designer for the piece.
