LIKES SEACOAST JONES
I want to thank you for your informative web site on John Paul Jones. In the many maritime history web sites I have reviewed for clients in the past, this one stands out as one of the better presented ones I have seen.

SITE MAP BUSTED?
I went to your web site and printed several pages of information, but the site map would not come up with several tries. Please advise.
Jack E
WEvans1632@aol.com

EDITOR'S REPLY: Works fine on this end. Perhaps, with 800 pages now on-line at SeacoastNH.com, the size of the map may come up slowly on some systems during peak use hours. Good things come to he who waits a few more milliseconds.

SEA CAMPING IN NH?
I'm looking for a campground on the ocean. Is there any?
Jeffrey S

EDITOR'S REPLY: Our little 18 mile Seaocast area has plenty of riverside camping (click for Camping Page below), but nothing on the sea we know of. Just a bit to the North you'll find these three ocean camping sites -- courtesy of us -- plus a bonus link to the York Chamber of Commece web site. (1) Libby's on Long Sands -- 207-363-4171, (2) Camp Eaton -- 207-363-3424, (3) Cape Neddick Camp Ground -- 207- 363-4366. Camp on, dude!

CAFÉ ON THE CORNER
I've been to Market Square many times, I love it there ;it reminds me a lot of Old Montreal with an English flavor. I remember a map of the boutiques and cafés on the site, do you have it on the Internet ? I found the map of the streets only ; I am going again this June and since I will meet a friend there, I was looking for the name of the café on a corner, across St-John's church and the street where " The Cat House" is.
MiladySue@aol.com

EDITOR'S REPLY: We haven't put together an on-line café guide yet, but there are a few freebie paper maps handed out around town. Could you be referring to Café Brioche in the center of Market Square at the corner of Daniel and Pleasant? St. John's is way over by the river. There are free maps hanging on the door at the Brioche when you arrive. Except for that pet accessories store nearby, we closed all the cat houses at the turn of the century.

ANY MORE TICKETS TO HEAVEN?
I realize your corner of the world must remain protected, however I am a transplanted New Englander (currently in Florida, ugh) in search of meaningful employment on the Seacoast. I would love to learn more about your business community and all its opportunities. I have heard wonderful things about your area and hope it THE PLACE where I may live the American Dream, New England style!
R. Byron Sanders
orby@mindspring.com

EDITOR'S REPLY: Sorry the last local job has been filled until 2023. Only wealthy tourists allowed in. But seriously folks, we get a ton of calls from people looking for local jobs, but there other than subscribing to the newspaper want ads, there seems to be no way to search. Seasonal jobs are in abundance, but there is much less available for skilled workers. Remember, this is a very small area. (Portsmouth, pop 26,000). A quick look at on-line publications and search engines turned up no on-line way to seek employment here. Anyone who knows otherwise, send us an e-mail.

MORE DEROCHEMONT
Would appreciate any information on the life of Louis deRochemont. My great-grandmother was Emma deRochemont Avery.
Ernie A or California
ehavery@ucdavis.edu

EDITOR'S REPLY: It's on the back burner. In our flurry of original de Rochemont articles last year, in preparation for a new "theme" site, we came close to finishing a de Rochemont bio web page. It is still on the back burner. Since no published biography exists, perhaps we should turn up the heat a notch.

KNOCK, KNOCK, TOBIAS
I am trying to verify when the Lear house is open. On this page it is stated that the house is open 1 - 4 on Wednesdays, however, I have read that it is only open one day per year. We will be visiting the area in June/July and I would love to be sure to see the house.
Steven A. Lear
sal1207@aol.com

EDITOR'S REPLY: The practically undiscovered Lear House opens each year on Flag Day, which this year is June 14. It will again be open Wednesday afternoons and you go to the Wentworth-Gardner Mansion next door to get your tour guide. We have been assured that if you call ahead to the phone number listed on the web site (below)during summer hours, a tour can be arranged at other times as well. No Lear should miss it.

UNSINKABLE WOYACA!
I recieved the microfiche copy of the newspaper article regarding the launching of the SS Woyaca. (See May 13 READ OUR MAIL, scroll down)I showed the article to my father, and he enjoyed it very much. (Via SeacoastNH.com) I also received an article on the Shattuck Shipyard from the NH Historical Society. Now my next voyage into this research takes me to the U.S. Shipping Board, which took pocession of her (Woyaca) and the other 3,500 ton ships built during the yard's two year history, I am assuming. You kind people of SeacoastNH.com and the NH Historical Society have been of much help to me.

LOST PLAYHOUSE
The location you indicate (TOURING/Maps)for the Hampton Playhouse is on the wrong side of Locke Road. It should be shown closer to the beach rather than town. FREAK (ALMOST) OUT
Any updated info on the release of "The Mighty," the movie based on Freak the Mighty? I use the book with 6th graders, and we'd really like to see the flick!

EDITOR'S REPLY: Portsmouth-born "Freak" author Rod Philbrick is back in town from his long Florida winter and sporting a goatee. He saw the Miramax film for the first time last week at a Florida advance showing. It is still slated for October release. He promises to write about it in our ShoBiz column, so check regularly:

WE CHRISTEN THEE, WOYACA!
I have this relic from a boat called the SS Woyaca and I know nothing else other than what is engraved on the sterling silver plate. What I have is a ship's christening bottle. It appears what was left of the neck of the bottle was saved on a wooden form in the shape of the rest of the bottle. On it is a sterling silver engraved plate with the following: S.S. Woyaca -- Launched Dec. 7, 1918 -- Sponsor Mrs F.W. Hartford -- Portsmouth, NH -- Presented by J.M. Shattuck Inc. Anyway, if you could help me out, I would greatly appreciate it.
Kevin in S.E. Pa.
mcaleek@voicenet.com |

EDITOR'S REPLY: Mike at the Portsmouth Library found an article in the Portsmouth Herald. The woman who christened the ship was wife to a former Herald owner. The headline reads: PICTURESQUE LAUNCHING AT NEWINGTON. The Woyaca, was originally to be named the SS Newington, but another "Newington" was already in service. This was a 3500 ton cargo steamer. It slipped quietly into the Piscataqua River ("the Thames of New England") on "a fine snappy day" at the Shattuck boat yard. Apparently Mrs. Hartford brought hundreds of ladies in their furs. The article says, "It was about 3 o'clock when the signal was given and the monster started and the sponsor smashed the beautifully decorated bottle of champagne on her bow and acclaimed 'I christen thee Woyaca.' The thousands of guests and workmen sent up a husky cheer as the big ship majestically took to the river waters." How's that Kevin?

WALK EAST ON BEACON STREET
My late mother, Patricia Hutton (who may have used the stage name Pat Hayes), I believe, was in the film "Walk East on Beacon Street". I have never seen it and I have been unsuccessful in locating a copy. This was her only film appearance.

EDITOR'S REPLY: We too have been so far unable to find "Walk East," but Larry Benaquist, who teaches Film History at Keene State College may be your next best hope for this locally shot film by Louis de Rochemont.

LOOKING FOR "PINKY"
First, I would like to say that this is a wonderful, informative web site. Secondly, I would like to say that I would have never discovered this site had it not been for my reading a biography on Dorthy Dandridge. "Lost Boundaries" and "Pinky" are mentioned in the book in regards to the "black" film industry in Hollywood. How can one go about obtaining these movies? At almost 30 I am really starting to learn about my heritage and my people.
Lillian
cfrazier@custfirst.com

EDITOR'S REPLY: We also want to compare the 1949 film "Pinky" to the NH classic by Louis de Rochemont. Pinky is another "white like me" film produced at the close of the "separate but equal" era in American history. The star of Pinky finds herself "passing" for white as she inherits a plantation. Odd as they may seem today, these early racial films shed a curious light on the evolution of the black cinema. You can rent or buy Pinky from Reel.com. Just click below and type the title into the Search block.

DRIVING TO THE ISLES
How are the Isles of Shoals accessed? The web site is great, especially the graphics. Could not find driving directions.
Janet from Rockport, Mass
ktiel@bellatlantic.net

EDITOR'S REPLY: Afraid you'll need a boat for this trip. Almost everybody takes the Thomas Laighton ferry. Just go to downtown Portsmouth at the dock at the end of Market Street near the giant salt pile. You can get all the info on their Isles web site, including rates and directions. (Tell them we sent you.) And check our recent turn-of-the-century postcard views of Star Island, the only one that allows a stopover.

MORE ON LUCY HALE?
I've read several of your writings regarding Sen. Hale, Pres. Lincoln and J.W. Booth. I wonder if you would share your thoughts on Lucy Hale?
Tom
tdunn@bit-net.com

EDITOR'S REPLY: We're still not sure what to make of Lucy. It appears she was really taken by Booth and was distraught over his death. Her father so effectively sanitized the press reports of Lucy's "engagement" to Booth, that little public record apparently remains. Lucy stayed with JP during this term as Spanish Ambassador immediately following the assassination. She did not marry William Chandler (he then had two children by his first wife) until her father died. In an 1885 biography of Chandler in "Successful NH Men," Lucy was not even named, but listed only as the daughter of Sen. Hale. This is a story yet to be told.

WRECKED AGAIN?
As a child 50 years ago I remember playing on a wreck at this spot. At the time I was told that it was an old barge that had washed ashore many years before. Is this the same wreck???
Chris Waldron

EDITOR'S REPLY: Quite likely, if you were playing down by the fast water at "Stinky Creek" off Wallis Sands by the little road bridge. This vessel was probably at least 50 years old or older in your time. Why not send us more details, oral history, memories? To see the wreck go to:
