And patrons won’t want to miss opening artist Nellie McKay, who created buzz from New York to LA this summer for her fabulous musical presentation I Want to Live— cited by The New Yorker as ‘a brilliant piece of theater.
About Madeleine Peyroux
Peyroux began singing at the age of 15, molding her style on the cornerstones of jazz: Billie Holiday, Bessie Smith and Louis Armstrong. Her first album, Dreamland, was released in 1996 by Atlantic records. Cited by Time magazine as “the most exciting, involving vocal performance by a new singer this year,” the album gained widespread acclaim. Six years later, after staying out of the limelight and living in Paris for much of the time, Peyroux teamed up with Rounder Records to release her second album, Careless Love. Produced by Larry Klein (Joni Mitchell, Herbie Hancock) it fused Peyroux's personal and vulnerable take on more modern material, i.e., Leonard Cohen, Bob Dylan, cult legend Elliott Smith, with that of her beloved torch songs and early blues. Her third solo album, Half the Perfect World, was released in 2006, and in 2007, she was awarded Best International Jazz Artist at the BBC Jazz Awards.
In 2009, Peyroux took a turn into uncharted territory with her fourth solo album, Bare Bones, with all original tracks. The album was produced by Larry Klein and Peyroux collaborated with songwriters such as Joe Henry and Steely Dan’s Walter Becker as well as writing her own compositions. Also in 2009, Peyroux released her first live concert album, Somethin' Grand, filmed and recorded in
Earlier this year, the songstress with “a Mona Lisa voice and a personality to match” (New York Times) released Standing On the Rooftop (Emarcy/Decca), in which she continues to reinvent herself and explore new sounds with a compelling collection of original compositions. “I have been building on the relationships I developed in co-writing, and something new has taken hold of me," Peyroux says on her website. "This project is meant to be a wider dreamscape than previous recordings. I am the same singer I was as a teen, who wants to grow into music, wherever it comes from. I don’t believe I’ve given up anything. I’ve added to myself.”
