As one of the more enduring heroes of the American Revolution, it is not surprising that John Paul Jones, the subject of numerous biographies and children’s adventure stories, has also been the subject of several plays and one movie.

Paul Jones, Opera Comique starred Agnes Huntington as our hero. Although a hit in London and New York in 1889, the story bears little resemblance to Jones’s career.

The 1959 movie, starring Robert Stack as John Paul Jones, provides a recognizable version of his life and career. A relatively new musical, John Paul Jones, by Julian Wagstaff was commissioned for the Edinburgh Arts Festival in 2002 and performed there.

Thanks to J. Dennis Robinson we have a recording of it—this is your chance to hear a Scottish version of Jones’s adventures. This is part of our series of lectures that accompany the exhibit John Paul Jones, American Naval Hero: Real and Imagined, which will be at the John Paul Jones House through October 31. Please contact Sandra Rux at 436-8420 for more information.

The John Paul Jones House museum, operated by the Portsmouth Historical Society is open from 11-5 seven days a week through October 31.
