Born on July 6, 1747 in Scotland, local legend says John Paul Jones lodged in the house in Portsmouth in 1781 while awaiting the completion of his ship. A US Navy contingent from the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard helps present the colors as a birthday salute. John Paul Jones would appreciate the party since he was known for providing celebrations complete with fireworks for the citizens of Portsmouth—one for the 4th of July 1781 and one for Marie Antoinette's birthday, in honor of America’s French allies.

The John Paul Jones House Museum will also be open on Sunday, July 8 at no charge from 11 am to 5 pm, including the " War of 1812: What It Meant to Portsmouth” and “An Uncommon Commitment to Peace: Portsmouth Peace Treaty” exhibits. No reservations required for either event. For more information, call 603-436-8420.
