Geoff_Clark_in_Greely_movieThe Gundalow Company will host a three-part winter film series featuring documentaries with nautical themes. Films will be shown on Wednesday, January 19, February 16 and March 16 at 7:00 pm at the Gundalow Company headquarters at 60 Marcy Street in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. The Gundalow Winter Film Series is free and open to the public. (Continued below)

Kicking off the film series on January 19 is “Around Cape Horn,” which captures Captain Irving Johnson’s voyage on the big German four-masted barque Peking in 1929. At the time when the sun was setting on the golden days of commercial sail, Johnson compiled unequaled footage of the crew's daily activities, and spectacular images of a wild storm as the ship made the dangerous passage around Cape Horn.

On February 16, the Gundalow Winter Film Series will feature “Abandoned in the Arctic” and will be introduced by the film’s executive producer and Portsmouth resident, Dr. Geoffrey E. Clark. “Abandoned” attempts to unravel the mystery surrounding what really happened during Adolphus Greeley’s ill fated 1881 expedition to the arctic.

The final evening on March 16 will feature two documentaries “Fame: The Salem Privateer” and “Canal Schooner Lois McClure” with a post film discussion by the schooner’s builder, Paul Rollins. Both films chronicle the construction of replica ships and their ultimate use as educational vessels.

“After a successful fall with our Contemporary Coastal Issues series, we want to continue welcoming the public each month at our Portsmouth headquarters for fun and informative programs,” notes Molly Bolster, Executive Director of the Gundalow Company. “Films are a great way to liven up a few cold winter nights and we’re fortunate that two of the documentaries have Portsmouth connections.”
