Farmers Markets Still Open

pumpkinsSummer is over but farmers’ market season is not! Weekly outdoor markets are still going strong. The Exeter Farmers’ Market will continue at Swasey Parkway on Thursdays from 2:15 to 6:00 p.m. through October 28. The Portsmouth Farmers’ Market lasts even later, on Saturdays from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in the City Hall parking lot on Junkins Avenue. The final outdoor market of the season will be November 6. In addition to fresh produce still being harvested from local farms—including pumpkins by the ton—vendors come every week with delicious prepared foods and handmade crafts. Sip freshly brewed coffee or tea and nibble on a hot breakfast sandwich or burrito while strolling the stands. Browse the jewelry, yarn, pottery and more for early holiday gifts, and pick up dinner while you’re at it. There is still plenty to take in.

Live music at the Portsmouth Farmers’ Market also continues into next month. The lineup includes the Iron Skillet Band on Oct. 16 and Random Acts of Harmony on Oct. 23 (music from 9:00 a.m. until noon). The final two markets on Oct. 30 and Nov. 6 feature the piping hot tunes of duo Mike & Mike, whose energetic guitar playing, charming fiddle and tendency toward spontaneous lyrics keep market-goers amused and entertained.

Farmers’ Market regulars with their own green thumbs, legendary recipes and artistic streaks should note that the application season to become a vendor starts in winter with an early spring deadline (dates TBA). Those who might be interested in selling their wares are encouraged to sign up online for the farmers’ market e-newsletter for related announcements, or to monitor the Web site.
