A SHOALS HISTORY WEEKEND

Visitors to the next ISHRA history conference can experience island life and learn about energy sources of the past and future. Learn while you relax at the Isles of Shoals, six miles off the New Hampshire coast, from Friday, September 6, rough Sunday afternoon, September 8, 2013. 

 

Open to the public, the weekend program Energy at the Shoals is sponsored by the Isles of Shoals Historical and Research Association (ISHRA). Featured speakers will explain the solar energy system being considered for Star Island and lead a behind-the-scenes tour of how the island operates today, from diesel-powered electric generators to reverse osmosis systems that turn seawater into drinking water. 

Speakers will also offer a glimpse into the past, when 17th-century fishermen used the bright sunshine to dry salt cod at the Shoals and when a series of fuel sources powered White Island Light to warn ships away from the rocks. 

Participants will leave Portsmouth mid-afternoon Friday, September 6, aboard the Thomas Laighton and return Sunday afternoon, September 8. Casual social events, island strolls and a candlelit service in the 212-year-old Gosport Chapel will round out the weekend’s activities. 

Attendees will stay in rustic yet comfortable accommodations in the historic Oceanic Hotel and surrounding buildings on Star Island. Registration is $60 per person. Room and board, including all meals and round-trip boat transportation from Portsmouth, starts at $270 per person for the weekend, depending on type of accommodations.
