Earth Day is celebrated in a big way at the Children’s
Visitors are invited to make sun-catchers using recycled materials and found objects from 10 am – 1 pm, working with staff members from ReVision Energy. Between 10 am and 1 pm, kids can also construct their own bird feeder thanks to the Strafford County River Conservancy.
From 11 am – 1 pm, Norm Fracassa of Fracassa Design Works will offer hands-on exploration of roots and information about how root systems work. Wentworth Greenhouses will have colorful marigolds for children to plant in small pots to take home. This activity will be available until 2 pm.
At noon, Seacoast Eat Local will arrive with heirloom vegetable seeds for children to plant. They will also have a table of information about gardening and local food resources.
Throughout the day, families can learn more about composting at a demonstration station from Mr. Fox Composting. Children will see how worms help the composting process and they can also learn to sort different types of recyclable materials.
Children’s Museum staff members will lead other educational activities each hour, including exploration of the Cocheco Watershed, clean-up of an oil spill, and an up-close look at the baby brook trout being raised at the Museum for spring release. There is also a map families can follow for a Green Scavenger Hunt to find all the sustainable practices in place in the Museum.
All Earth Day activities are included with paid admission ($9 each for adults and children, $8 for seniors) and free for museum members.
