Visit to Chebeague Island, Maine
Part 2; Chebeague Inn Summer 2000

Things look pretty much the same on Chebeague Island today as they did throughout the last century. Visitors walk from left to right up the hill through the middle of the golf course to get to the Chebeague Inn.

The water tower in the picture is still standing but the outfits have changed to a more casual look since this postcard was mailed in the early 1900s.

This hotel porch shot just misses the expansive view of the water and the mainland. Meals are served in a screened porch to the right and the scene is reminiscent of our annual trek to the Oceanic Hotel at Star island nearby in New Hampshire.

The main room of the Chebeague Inn is just as you'd hoped - open planking, giant fieldstone fireplace, lots of sunshine, bric-a-brac and a huge framed picture of Theodore Roosevelt. It was cool enough on the evening of July 4 to light a fire here.

While the locals are getting ready for the big summer parade and others are off playing the sport of kings, we check in. Then it's a quick walk to a nearby house that rents bikes and off for a tour of the island.
