The Durham HDC/Heritage Commission along with Three Chimney’s Inn, Durham Parks & Recreation and Durham Historical Association invites you to the Centennial Celebration of the Mill Pond Dam (1913-2013).  Come spend the afternoon Sunday September 15, 2013 at Durham’s most historic and beautiful Inn on the banks of the Oyster River to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the construction of the Mill Pond Dam. (Continued below)

The Mill Pond Dam is an Ambursen style dam. (Editor's note: A buttress dam in which the upstream part is a relatively thin flat slab usually made of reinforced concrete.) There are only five left in New Hampshire and this one is the oldest and only one of its kind still intact. It was made possible through a generous gift from Edith Onderdonk, step daughter of Hamilton Smith. In 1913, the last of the timber dams washed away and the Ambursen patent was obtained to construct the dam. The engineer of record was Professor Chas Elbert Hewitt, first chair of the Dept of Electrical Engineering at UNH.  The Dam is State and National Register eligible, and was also nominated to the 2010 Seven to Save.

Please join us for refreshments, birthday cake and learn about some fun history of the area featuring a slide show of the original construction of the dam from 1913. Three Chimney’s Coppers Room will be featuring historical exhibits, artifacts from the Museum, and memorabilia. There will also be several musical performances and activities for children, including a surprise  appearance.  Opening remarks will be at the Town Landing (Old Landing Road) by the footbridge at 2:30PM.  Parking will be available at the Inn, Town Landing, and Town Hall lots.
