Sample stamps from the 1765 Stamp Act that levied a British tax on colonial newspapers, legal documents, stationery and other items.
A 19th carving taken from the Liberty Pole on what is now Marcy Street across from Strawbery Banke in Portsmouth, NH. After a local mob forced George Meserve to resign his position as NH Stamp Agent, they erected a banner reading "Liberty, Property and No Stamp" on this site. (Courtesy Portsmouth Library)
The Liberty Pole was replaced a number of times, most recently in 1984 when a carved golden eagle was replaced at the top and the older carved wooden shield (see above) was replaced with a newer one that can be seen today.
