SEACOAST LIGHTHOUSES
The Portsmouth Herald logo is up for sale. The US Coast Guard has no more use for Whaleback Light that stands in the middle of Portsmouth Harbor on the Kittery side. Lighthouse must be taken as is – and it’s going to cost a bundle to maintain.

SCENIC SEACOAST
Three quarters of mile through poison ivy, angry gulls, rocks and bracken. And yet one of the most beautiful treks in the Seacoast. Privately owned and lovingly maintained by volunteers, this is the Isles of Shoals as it has been for centuries, perhaps millennia. We are there now. Come visit.

SEACOAST BY BIKE
Here’s why it is a very big deal for the seacoast region to officially declare itself "bicycle friendly". Just taking the pledge, even with no money or changes to the status quo, is the first step toward making a big difference in tourism and environmental issues.

What follows is the story of a daring 1839 rescue in a fierce storm. Some were saved. Some died. A century later drifting sand was so high that ligthouse keepers had to enter through a window.

East Providence, RI
Est. 1872, destroyed 1968.
It was the sight of a daring rescue and a lighthouse island wedding. The keeper and his wife raised their children inside this square squat structure. But this is one you cannot visit as it no longer shines.

SCENIC WALKS
Kittery. Maine
With the exception of Odiorne Point in Rye, this is the region’s largest and most scenic and diverse area to wander. The WWII era cement forts are crumbling, but the seaside path is spectacular for its rocky shore. More amazingly, these photos were taken in January.
