There’s really nothing wrong with the guy, he’s fun at parties and plenty of tickets are still available, but Bob Sprankle of South Berwick was told to forget it when he tried to buy a ticket for a local dinner/dance to benefit the new South Berwick library. Ladies only, Sprankle was informed. (Read more)

The March 23 Diva Night is a ladies only event to benefit with pink boas, pink drinks and lots of feminine energy to benefit the construction of a new library on Young Street.

“Every other dance and benefit around here is for anyone and everyone, but Diva Night is just for the women in town to celebrate each other,” said Rachel Martin of South Berwick, who is co-organizer of the fundraiser.

When Martin first came up with the idea of a Diva night, this is how she envisioned and how she hopes other women will see it too:

“Imagine this...You walk in and are surrounded by fabulous women ranging in ages from 21 to 99 ….You are draped with a hot pink boa and you're handed a decadent complimentary Diva cocktail...For one evening IT'S ALL ABOUT YOU.”

So far about a dozen women have volunteered to help create the evening. This includes Hanna Bulger of good girl graphics, a professional graphic artist, who created the Diva Night logo, tickets, and poster. Messages have been flying between young mothers, and retired grandmothers, local professional women and PTA heads. The buzz is on!

“I know men could never get away with a men only event like this,” said Cynthia Gagnon, co-organizer with Martin. “They would get too much grief. But that’s just the way it is. And we think that the women of this town deserve one night out together.”

Martin admits there will be a few men inside the Barn that night, but they will be there only as volunteers.

“We are allowing about six or seven lucky men to serve the women,” said Martin.

The event will help the Friends of South Berwick Library privately raise $1 million toward the cost of renovating the former St. Michael's Church on Young Street intp the new public Library.  The Friends' Capital Campaign has already raised $365,000 in gifts, grants, and pledges.  The Town voted in November of 2010 to contribute $1.5 million in tax money toward the project.  The wing addition of the new Library is expected to open this March. The rest of the building will open as the funds are raised for renovations.

A ticket for Diva Night will cost $40, which will include “eats and sweets”, door prizes, raffle tickets, and dancing to PB&J’s fun cover band music.

A silent auction so far offers many great items, including tickets to a Celtics game, golf for four, and time in a North Conway condo.

As the invitation on facebook says, “Come celebrate yourself, the beauty of your friends and wonderful women of all ages with a "Diva-licious" night “

And, with apologies to Sprankle, it says “Leave you-know-who and the rest of your crew at home and join us for this glamorous, glitzy night!”

On the other hand, it suggests you “Spread the word, invite your sister, aunt, mother, grandmother, friends and all the FABULOUS ladies you know!"

Already, 50 women have indicated they are coming. The room only holds 220 people so Martin suggests those who want to come not wait to get their tickets.

“It will be a night to remember and we want you there,” she said.

Tickets are available by calling Pam Hamel at 207- 384-5187.
