whittierMARK YOUR CALENDAR

John Greenleaf Whittier is busy this December. Not only is this the poet’s 204th birthday month, but his friend Longfellow is visiting, he’s holding an open house, and there’s a reading of his bestselling poem “Snowbound.” Check below from a calendar of Whittier events in his hometown of Amesbury, MA. (Continued below)

Snowbound
Thursday, December 8th, 2:00 pm
Whittier Home Association, 86 Friend Street, Amesbury.

Gus Reusch, curator of the Whittier Birthplace, will present a reading of “Snowbound” in the person of our Quaker poet. This will be followed by our Holiday Membership Tea chaired by Paula McPartland and her committee. Guests are welcome ($5).

A little smile, a word of cheer,
A bit of love from someone near,
A little gift from one held dear,
Best wishes for the coming year...
These make a Merry Christmas!
-- John Greenleaf Whittier

Henry Wadsworth Longfellow: the Poet’s Songs.
Sunday, December 11th at 2:00 pm

Quaker Meetinghouse, 120 Friend Street, Amesbury (free parking at Jutras Funeral Home).

Historian Robert Velella will take us on a trip back through time in a living history in which he becomes Longfellow as a young poet. We explore his life and the enduring friendship he shared with John Greenleaf Whittier. The program is free and funded by a grant from the Amesbury Cultural Council.  Any donations would be warmly received toward upkeep of the home/museum. Following the presentation, all are welcome to take a short walk to the Whittier Home, 86 Friend St. for refreshments.

Annual Community Holiday Open House.
Sunday, December 11th from 3:00-5:00 pm.

Whittier Home Association, 86 Friend Street, Amesbury.

Guests will be welcomed by lovely strains of seasonal music by classical guitarist Sharon Netzley, of Haverhill, and Mister Whittier (former Mayor). The Whittier women volunteers invite one and all to enjoy the artistic holiday décor and Victorian style table of delectable treats. The gift shop will be open to provide visitors with special gifts for the holidays, or folks are welcome to visit our online gift shop at http://www.whittierhome.org.
