Memorial Bridge detail/Phil CohenThe Gallery at 100 Market Street announces the opening of its "Summer Juried Exhibtion," with an artist’s reception, from 5 to 7 p.m on August 13. The show features the work of two-dozen artists from throughout New England and will continue through November1. (Details below)

"This is a theme-free show with a mix of mediums and subjects, a smorgasbord of visions and approaches," says Michael Simchik, building owner and gallery sponsor. "And surprisingly enough, after more than a decade of exhibits, it’s the first time we’ll feature an artist whose work is focused on Portsmouth and its iconic images."

Since it’s inception the alternative gallery has avoided all but the most unique images of the seacoast, giving preference to work less apt to find placement in commercial establishments. This time there will be nearly 20 Portsmouth images by Philip Case Cohen, who chronicles the seacoast for his popular blog The Daily Portsmouth. Each of his images will feature a unique path to and in honor of Portsmouth.

Other Portsmouth images with a twist include the textile work of Nancy Morgan and a special Portsmouth’s current moment shot by photographer Danica Carlson.

"For us, offering town specific images is shaking it up," says Simchik. "But don’t expect our walls to be lined with lighthouses, as lovely as they may be. It is a lighter show than many, more peaceful perhaps, but expect our usual unique and thought provoking pieces."

The show includes oils, watercolors, pastels, photography, textile art and egg tempera in a full range of styles. Exhibiting artists include Gene Galipeau, Richard H. Lord, Terri Ellen Donsker, Ann Jones, Barbara Stevens Adams, Toby Gordon, Teri Martin, Nancy Morgan, Marina Forbes, Ann Howland, Aline Lotter, Joanna Doyle, Flo Parlangeli, Jeannie Griffin–Peterka, Linda Gerson, Mark Bolton, Duston Knight, Debra Holloway and Bill Oakes. Seacoast illustrator Cori Caputo will exhibit photos rather than her usual renderings.

"Every show has new artists, but this one more than usual. Because of the no-fee, no-percent policy we often have artists who take advantage of the gallery and submit show after show, " says Jean Hurlbut, McLane Law Firm’s gallery liaison, a show supporter. "But there’s a major influx with this show, a lot of new hands gracing the walls. There’s no doubt people will be taken by this exhibit."
