Rare Trip up Pulpit Rock Tower
Written by Top Events

Pulpit_Rock_towerDon't miss  the the first ever open house. Pulpit Rock Tower is an 83 foot high cylindrical reinforced concrete tower, built to assist in the World War II defense of the New Hampshire seacoast, including the deep water port of Portsmouth and its navy yard

MARK YOUR CALENDAR
October 17, 10 am to 2 pm
Rye, NH.

At the open house, Pulpit Rock Tower will be open to the public for viewing, although the roof deck will remain closed due to safety considerations.   Visitors will be able to climb the stairs, learn about the tower’s history and take in the amazing views from the observations windows.    FOPRT and Fish and Game Dept. volunteers will be on hand to answer questions and explain further the history and significance of Pulpit Rock Tower.

Unfortunately, the property is very rough and not accessible for persons with mobility disabilities. A dirt path leads to the tower; steep stairs must be climbed to enter the tower and seven flights of dimly lit, winding stairs must be climbed to reach the observation areas. Only those in good health and with good mobility should attempt to climb the tower.

This is not recommended for children under 6 yrs. of age.  (If you, or someone you know, is a disabled person and wishes to visit the site during an open house event, you are requested to call in advance, at 603-373-0646. FOPRT will make all reasonable accommodation to provide access or information for you during regular open house hours.)

In the event of rain, the open house will be held on Sunday, October 18, 2009 from 10AM to 2PM.   A tax-deductible donation of $2.00 per visitor is suggested, but not required.  Pulpit Rock Tower is located off Ocean Blvd. (Route 1A) in Rye, approximately half-way between Odiorne Point State Park and Wallis Sands State Beach.  Visitors are requested to park at the pull out on Ocean Blvd. across from Neptune Drive, cross the road on foot and take the short walk to the tower off Neptune Drive.
