You keep hearing about the famous producer Louis de Rochemont from Newington. Now see three of his films in his own home town. The Newington Historical Society presents three classics in living color (and black and white) in de Rochemont’s own living room!
MARK YOUR CALENDAR Oct 15, Nov 12, Dec 7 Newington, NH
NHS is continuing its program of Louis de Rochemont tributes with the 2009 film festival. Movies are being shown in Louis’ renovated house now on the corner of Piscataqua Drive and Shattuck Way (enter opposite Fox Run Mall). Whole Life Health is hosting four film showings in the original living room. All shows are free and start at 7:00 pm. Everyone is welcome.
READ MORE on Louis de Rochemont October 15 – Lost Boundaries - a 1949 film telling the story of a light skinned African-American doctor and his family living in Keene, NH. This early race film was banned in the South. November 12 – House on 92nd Street - a 1945 drama about the destruction of a Nazi spy ring operating in the US. It is a thinly disguised version of the FBI's real-life Duquesne Spy Ring saga of 1941. the largest convicted espionage case in the history of the United States. The film won an Academy Award for the best original motion picture story.
December 7 – 13 Rue Madeleine - a 1947 spy film starring James Cagney as a G-man. A totally watchable film these days and likely one you’ve never seen.
Louis de Rochemont lived in Newington from 1940 until a few years before his death in 1978. His movie making career started at age 12, and he left several planned projects when he died. His films were often shot locally, using local settings and extras. Before moving to film features, de Rochemont produced the popular MARCH OF TIME series of short documentaries shown in theatres in the era before television. His film credits include the Academy Award winning documentary Fighting Lady, the cartoon version of Orwell’s classic Animal Farm, the steamy Romance of Mrs. Stone, the Whistle at Eaton Falls, atomic spy thriller Walk East on Beacon Street, the real-life murder mystery Boomerang, and many more. The NHS has the opportunity to help rediscover his work thanks to a grant from the rehabilitation of his historic house. Anyone interested in helping with this project is urged to contact the NHS. Please come and enjoy the 2009 Film Festival.
