SofiaPiel_FishermanGallery 6 at the Children’s Museum offers you a glimpse the disappearing lifestyles of NH. Charter Weeks documents the fading dairy farms and Sophia Piel depicts the vanishing fishing industry.

PHOTO EXHIBIT RUNS
Through November 29
Dover, NH

Gallery 6 at the Dover, NH museum features two thought-provoking photography exhibits: Yesterday’s Man by Charter Weeks and Vanishing Landscapes by Sofia Piel. Both exhibits offer an inside look at venerable New England occupations that are falling by the wayside in modern times.

Charter Weeks’ photo essay, Yesterday’s Man, focuses on the workings of one of the region’s last remaining dairy farms. The photos depict the raw daily challenges and moments of beauty found on a New Hampshire family farm. This exhibit is particularly poignant, as the farm’s owner and guiding force, Arthur Scruton, passed away soon after the photos were taken.

Seacoast photojournalist Sofia Piel explores the elements of New England’s dwindling fishing industry in her exhibit, Vanishing Landscapes. Spending time with fisherman at sea, Piel captured timeless images of men and their catch, as well as the undeveloped natural surroundings that still exist in this part of the world.

Gallery 6 is open during regular business hours at the Children’s Museum of New Hampshire in Dover: Tuesday – Saturday, 10 am – 5 pm and Sunday noon – 5 pm.

About the Artists

Charter Weeks has been photographing for over 40 years. His work has appeared in galleries in Colorado, Massachusetts, Maine and New Hampshire. He has also been published in Graphis, The New York Times, Virginia Quarterly Review, Rivendell, Corvette Fever and other magazines and journals. He has photographed widely in the US, China, Africa, and Europe.

A vagabond at heart, Sofia Piel has recently moved back to New England from Sweden where she lived for eight years, working as a journalist and studying languages, theatre and photography. She holds a Bachelors of Arts degree in English Literature and Studio Art from the University of New Hampshire, and is now working as Marketing Director for NHTP as well as teaching theatre for the Artist in Residence program. She recently wrote, photographed and performed "Traveling", a multi-media production, at West End Studio Theatre.
