See Shooting Star in York
Shooting_StarAfter the smash success of CREEK MAN last spring, Harbor Light Stage announces its return to the York Harbor Reading Room for a new dinner-and-theatre production: the delightful new romantic comedy SHOOTING STAR by Steven Dietz.

Audiences will again this year have the rare opportunity to savor the masterful creations of chef Bob Martin on the Reading Room dining porch, with its stunning wrap-around views of the Atlantic. Then they will step into the club’s vaulted Great Room for a smart, moving, and very funny play about two former lovers unexpectedly reunited after 25 years when a snowstorm strands them together in an airport. SHOOTING STAR will feature Seacoast favorite Blair Hundertmark and Portland lead Denise Poirier as the two star-crossed ex-lovers.

"Someone has your secret," wrote playwright Dietz in the program of SHOOTING STAR’s premier in Austin last year. "Someone from your past. They have your secret because they once had your heart."

In this case, the secrets are held by straight-laced businessman Reed McAllister (Hundertmark) and aging hippie Elena Carson (Poirier). They were lovers in Madison in their early twenties (think 1970s) and they represent, in their own way, the painfully comic contrast between young ideals and all that happens later.

When Reed and Elena see each other from afar in the nameless terminal, Reed is reluctantly on his way to a hopeless business call in Austin. Elena crosses his path on her way to Boston ("the old part") to visit a friend. After reminiscences, searches of each other’s wallets, and several drinks in the airport lounge, Reed and Elena open up decades-old baggage with each other and slowly admit to the realities of their lives apart for a quarter century.

The result is vintage Harbor Light Stage: intelligent, heartfelt, masterfully written and—beneath its abundant humor—touching on deeper themes such as forgiveness for the past and the inevitable march of time. The show is presented in one engaging act, about 85 minutes.

The renowned York Harbor Reading Room is open to non-members for this occasion only, so audiences are encouraged to linger after the performance to soak up the atmosphere and the views. For more about the Reading Room, including a lovely array of photos, visit their web site. The Reading Room is located at 491 York Street, York Harbor, Maine 03911. SHOOTING STAR is sponsored in part by Seatrade International.
