Ogunquit Museum Of American Art 2014 Season

Andrew-Wyeth Ogunquit-Art-MuseumOPEN MAY 1- October 31

Throughout the season the Ogunquit Museum of American Art features exhibitions of John Laurent, Andrew Wyeth, Richard Brown Lethem, Alexandra de Steiguer, Amy Stacey Curtis and Henry Strater, as well as recent acquisitions and works from the permanent collection.

May 1, through June 22, features “John Laurent” in the Sculpture Gallery and Long Gallery.  A descendant of the long tradition of Ogunquit artists, John Laurent was the son of Robert Laurent, also an accomplished artist, and one of the founders of the Ogunquit Art Colony. Laurent grew from the shadow of his famous father to become one of Maine’s most accomplished artists and teachers. This is the first retrospective of the artist’s work in many years and features early and little-known works on paper and canvas.

May 1, through June 15, features “Recent Acquisitions” in the Small Gallery. In 2013 the Museum accessioned 300 works into the permanent collection. This exhibition includes a selection of these wonderful works.

May 1, through October 31, features “Henry Strater: Arizona Winters” in the Strater Gallery. Strater, founder of the Ogunquit Museum of American Art, created these large pastoral works in the early 1930’s.

May 1, through October 31, features “Tradition and Excellence: The OMAA Permanent Collection” in the Barn Gallery Associates Wing.

June 26, through October 31, features “Andrew Wyeth: The Linda L. Bean Collection” in the Long Gallery. This selection of Wyeth works resides in the collection of Linda L. Bean, a member of one of Maine’s most prominent families. Her collection, assembled over the past 30 years, includes N. C. Wyeth and Jamie Wyeth, as well as Andrew’s work. This is the first time this collection has ever been shown in public.

June 26, through August 31, features “Richard Brown Lethem: Figure↔Abstraction” in the Sculpture Gallery. Brown Lethem’s work is borne of abstract expressionism, but reaches beyond the bounds of simple abstraction into the world of the figure. In his best work, he combines the inward life of the abstractionist with the outer world figures, connecting emotional consciousness with the visceral form.

June 19, through August 31, features “Alexandra de Steiguer: Small Island, Big Picture” in the Small Gallery. de Steiguer has spent the last 17 years as the winter caretaker on Star Island at the Isles of Shoals. From early November through March she is the sole human living on the island. In her solitude she photographs the island and keeps voluminous journals while living a life of seclusion and contemplation.

September 4, through October 31, features “A Modernist Menagerie: Works from the Permanent Collection” in the Sculpture Gallery. This exhibition includes sculptures, paintings and works on paper from the permanent collection. It includes artists Carl Walters, Frances Lamont, Bernard Karfiol, Dahlov Ipcar, Bernard Langlais, and other modernists who used animals as subjects for their modernist musings.

September 4, through October 31, features “Amy Stracey Curtis: Drawings” in the Small Gallery. In 1998, Amy Stacey Curtis began what would be an 18-year commitment to art-making, a project culminating in nine solo-biennial exhibits from the year 2000 to the year 2016. In the end, she will have installed 81 large-in-scope, interactive works in the vast empty mill spaces of eight or nine Maine towns. Each solo biennial is a 22-month process from conceptualization to documentation, each exploring a different theme while requiring audiences to perpetuate its multiple installations. For the first time Curtis’ biennial installation will be located in southern Maine. MATTER, her exhibition sponsored in part by the OMAA, comprises nine temporary large-scale works, each an audience-activated experience. This exhibition is comprised of drawings purchased by the Museum in support of the artist’ installation.

In addition to the exhibitions, the Ogunquit Museum of American Art hosts several events throughout the season.

April 12, is the annual ABC sale from  9am to 2pm. ABC is an exclusive selection of paintings, drawings, books, and other collectibles.

June 13, 14, and 15, is the OMAA’s fourth annual “Art in Bloom” event.  Each year, the Museum welcomes a talented group of florists to interpret a work from the current exhibitions into an original floral design or arrangement.  These beautiful and unique creations showcase the art of floral arranging, and offer visitors a new perspective on some of the Museum’s most loved pieces.

August 23, is the “Art by the Sea” event, the Museum's major annual fundraiser. The evening includes a live auction, cocktails, hors d'oeuvres, music, arts and entertainment. Admission is $125 and all proceeds benefit the OMAA.
