November 5 at 5:30 pm, Pontine Theatre continues its Humanities Series with "The New England Town"  an hour-long presentation by Dartmouth Professor of History Emeritus, Jere Daniell.  The presentation is open to the public free of charge, thanks to funding from the New Hampshire Humanities Council.  (Click link for full articles or see below) 

Light refreshment will be available and no reservation is required to attend.  Pontine's West End Studio Theatre is located at 959 Islington Street in Portsmouth.  The building is not visible from the street; look for the big 959 at the head of the drive.  

Themes addressed in Professor Daniell's presentation include "Popular Images of Small Town New England," "Novels set in New England Towns," and "The New Hampshire Town,"  which includes a comparison of Granite State towns to others in New England.  Each year he gives more than fifty lectures sponsored by historical societies, libraries, and adult education programs.  His talks cover subjects related to Colonial America, The American Revolution, and The History of New England.  

Pontine's Humanities Series continues on Tuesday, November 19 with  Yankee Magazine's Edie Clark's presentation "New England: Fact or Fiction?"  The series continues in the Spring with programs about the Isles of Shoals by Portsmouth's John Perrault and J. Dennis Robinson. 

In addition to its Humanities Series, Pontine, a resident company at Portsmouth's West End Studio Theatre, presents an annual Performance Series featuring its own original productions and those of invited guest artists.  It also produces an annual Cafe-Lyceum Series, featuring scenes from its popular plays based on New England history and literature.  Now celebrating its 36th Season, the company was named "Best Historical Theater" by NH Magazine in July 2013: "Pontine conspires to fascinate the contemporary mind with original works based upon stories and literature of New England.  There's really nothing else like it anywhere."  Contact Pontine at -- www.pontine.org or  603-436-6660.
