Build an Oyster Cat Sailboat with Your Family in Just Three Days

As warmer days approach, families can spend the summer sailing in a boat they built together -- right now. Applications are now being accepted for the 2014 Family Boat Building Workshop sponsored by the UNH Marine Docents.

During the weekend of May 16-18, 2014, six families will build the “Oyster Cat” 12-foot sailboat which can safely carry a family of three for a day on quiet water and make memories for a lifetime. 

“This program gives each family the joy of completing a complex task together and a means of enjoying our marine resources,” said Mark Wiley, N.H. Sea Grant/UNH Cooperative Extension assistant director for education. “We guarantee a 100% success rate.”

Eligible families must include one or two adults and at least one child age 12 to 20. No prior woodworking experience beyond basic skills using hand tools required. An experienced docent boat builder will assist each family. Single parents, “all thumbs” candidates, and extended families are all welcome to participate.

The program fee includes all boat-building materials and a professionally made sail. Space is limited. Interested families must submit an application by April 15, 2014.
