Join us on Sunday, February 16 at the Discover Portsmouth Center for the third in a series of participatory talks, celebrating Black History Month,to discover this discounted and often ignored story of our American history. This program, presented by the Portsmouth Black Heritage Trail and the Seacoast African American Cultural Center entitled Black Indians: An American Story will feature segments of the award winning film followed by a discussion with Everett “Tall Oak” Weeden, a Mashantucket Pequot/Wampanoag Native American from Rhode Island. 

Given his Native American name, “Tall Oak”, at the age of 16, he has devoted his life to the survival of the native people of the Americas, with emphasis on the Northeast. This struggle has involved a life-long accumulation of knowledge about his people through not only research, but also the fortunate exposure to much Native American oral tradition. 

Tall Oak, a researcher, lecturer and performer was an integral part of the 2002 spiritual and educational festival In Bermuda that reconnected native communities in the Eastern United States many of the tribes ancestors were shipped from the States to Bermuda against their will as slaves for a period of some 200 years.
