The traditional white church at the intersection of Portsmouth Avenue and Post Road in Greenland will soon be getting much-needed repairs to restore its steeple and clock to their original stately beauty. Steeplejacks from Mid-Maine Restoration have begin work on the steeple of the church, which was built in 1756. Community Congregational is one of the oldest United Church of Christ congregations in New Hampshire still holding services in its original building. (Click title to read more)

Mid-Maine Restoration has already finished work on the steeple of the Greenland Parish House, which is part of Community Congregational Church. This building houses the church's function hall, Sunday school and weekly food pantry, but also serves as a gathering place for Girl Scout and Boy Scout meetings, public suppers and fairs, library functions, weekly Scottish dancing and more. The Parish House renovations will also include extensive accessibility and safety updates. Once these renovations are completed, the Parish House will be more accessible to all and the congregation will be able to resume its important mission of housing homeless families on a rotating basis as a founding member of the Seacoast Family Promise network.

“These repairs and improvements are being funded by a capital campaign begun by the congregation earlier this year,” explained Heidi Duncanson, church member and communications coordinator for the campaign. “The congregation has raised more than $200,000 in donations and pledges thus far, allowing us to get started on the restoration and accessibility projects. We have set a goal of raising an additional $10,000 through outreach to the community, which will allow us to complete all of the planned work on our historic structures.”

Anyone wishing to donate to the campaign to help restore the Parish House, landmark building in Greenland, may mail a check, made payable to Community Congregational Church, to Community Congregational Church, PO Box 128, Greenland 03840, made payable to Community Congregational Church, attn: Joe Beauchemin, Financial Secretary.

Community Congregational Church was founded in 1706 and is a member of the United Church of Christ denomination, which was formed in 1957. The church’s sanctuary at 10 Post Road was built 258 years ago and is a familiar landmark at the corner of Route 151 and Portsmouth Avenue. Sunday services are led by Rev. Robert Fellows and held at 10 AM with Sunday School and childcare available. In addition to its participation in Seacoast Family Promise, the church is also involved in a number of local, national and international mission efforts.
