Hampton Beach 2014 Sand Sculpting Winners

The 2014 Hampton Beach Sand Sculpting Competition in Hampton Beach, NH has wrapped up a weekend of competition. The first place winner was Guy-Olivier Deveau from Quebec City, Canada with the sculpture "Inseminate." The alien-like sculpture had intricate detail and was inspired by the work of H.R. Giger, the Swiss artist responsible for the creature in the blockbuster movie Alien. (Click title for more) 


Second place went to Karen Fralich from Toronto, Canada with the sculpture, "Yin and Yang," a Yin-Yang symbol, representing two opposing forces. The sculpture featured a dragon and a rooster intertwined. Third place went to Carl Jara from Ohio was titled "Putting Down Roots," and featured male and female tree figures. Fourth place was "Serene Song." a sculpture made by David Andrews from Wisconsin And fifth place went to Damon Langlois from British Columbia with, "Out Of Sand," a sculpture of a male figure facing the sky.

The "Sculptor's Choice" Award went to David Andrews. The "People's Choice" Award went to Michel Lepire of Quebec, Canada with an intricate piece involving eagles and fish. The piece was titled, "Together We Are One."

The sculptures this year also included a whimsical guitar by Lucinda "Sandy Feet" Wierenga from Texas and a large seashell called "The Ocean Is Calling" by Greg Grady, Jr. Justin Gordon created an abstract piece with a series of circles and a large hand that represented the hand of God.

The sculptors carved over three days, from June 19-21, to complete their own solo sculpture using 10 tons of sand. Voting took place and awards were given out on Saturday, June 21 and the Awards Presentation, which was held on the Sea Shell stage, was followed by a fantastic fireworks display over the Atlantic Ocean. The sculptures will remain on display through July 6th, and will be lit for night viewing.
