James Barker Smith and Margaret Smith of Wentworth by the Sea / Portsmouth Athenaeum

THE SMITH ERA

More pictures from three decades at the summer hotel in New Castle. This collection comes from the Friends of the Wentworth, the group that "saved" the aging Victorian from destruction by locating a new owner.

Pictures from the Smith Era 1946-1982

James Barker and Margaret Smith owned Wentworth by the Sea in New Castle, NH from 1946 until 1980, just before the hotel’s long 20-year hibernation. Many still remember this era. The Smiths donated their library of nostalgic pictures to the Portsmouth Athenaeum, from which this collection comes. This is just a sampling of the pictures, all of which appeared in our book-length history of the 1874 seacoast hotel. -- JDR
