SeacoastNH.com Presents
Historic Portsmouth #388

Here is the third in our trio of Republican candidates for president stumping in Portsmouth. I counted at least 18 historic photos in the Portsmouth Athenaeum archive that show VP Richard Nixon campaigning here. (Continued below)

They include a perpetually smiling candidate stepping off an airplane, meeting the governor, and surrounded by local citizens. In one series we see Nixon “getting down” with students at the University of New Hampshire in 1968. He spoke during a gala fundraiser at Wentworth by the Sea in 1964 and left an autographed photo to hotel co-owner James Barker Smith. In one image from that series, the gentleman candidate is seen helping Margaret Smith from her car. Here a group of staff members grab a pose behind Mr. Nixon as he signs an autograph. President Nixon was inaugurated on January 20, 1969 and resigned on August 9, 1974. (Courtesy Portsmouth Athenaeum)
