In 1836 Portsmouth citizens needed a court house to replace the wooden one rotting in Market Square. After considering many styles and locations, this Greek Revival building was erected on renamed Court Street (formerly Jaffrey and Pitt streets). Although it was adjacent to the new firehouse, it caught fire and burned beyond use early in the 20th century.(click for full pic)
