Strawbery Banke Presents
HISTORIC PORTSMOUTH #12
We don’t know whether Helen Newell could really play the banjo. We do know that
"Nellie", seen wearing a garland of pinecones, was the daughter of photographer
Lafayette V. Newell. Born in Barnstead, Newell married Annie Rider of Portsmouth
in 1857. His photography shop on Congress Street created an incredible record
of Victorian Portsmouth.
