Waiting for the gundalow / Strawbery Banke ArchiveStrawbery Banke Presents
HISTORIC PORTSMOUTH #60

Many local children instantly recognize this vessel (click to see) as a gundalow. Shallow flat-bottomed barges like the one seen here could carry up to 50 tons of cargo throughout the Piscataqua region. Early ones had no deck and were propelled by poles or oars. The sail and rudder evolved later. Thanks to the Gundalow Company, kids and adults today can tour a reproduced 1886-style gundalow as it travels the seacoast.
