Victorian pole climber / Strawbery Banke Museum ArchivesStrawbery Banke Presents
HISTORIC PORTSMOUTH #53

Look carefully at this otherwise quiet Market Square image. Historians are clueless as to the identity of the plucky pole climber, who likely appeared above what today is Alie’s Jewelers sometime between 1887 and 1893. With help from building owner Steve Alie, we hope to do more research. There are clues embedded in the surrounding signs, architecture, surroundings and passersby.
