In 1958 a small group of preservationists mounted a Revolution to save an ailing neighborhood. Strawbery Banke Museum was founded, but the neighborhood was emptied of people. Then in the 1960s, professional historians staged another revolution and swept the grassroots museum founders from office.

This image shows a Revolutionary War re-enactor at Strawbery Banke, formerly Puddle Dock on the Portsmouth, NH waterfront. The tall grass indicates this is the mid-1960s. The battered Joshua Jones building was restored as the museum archaeology center.
